Gordon Hensley’s Grateful Dead Show List ‘77-’95
While doing research on a personal project, the time finally came to tabulate the hard number of Grateful Dead shows I attended — no more guessing or approximating.
Through an archived ticket stub review, personal recollection and some reconnoitering over the past few years with tour friends from long ago, the following comprehensive list has been reconstructed.
People ask: “How was it possible to recall your shows?” It’s not difficult if you invest the time and still have dozens of ticket stubs from the 80’s and 90’s to reconstruct tours.
While seeing a handful of late 70’s Dead shows (first was Boston Garden 5/7/77), a majority were on the east coast in the 1980’s and 1990’s. My show count is 181 — which sounds like a lot. But I know at least ten folks whose show count is 250–350.
My high water mark was 31 shows in 1981 while ostensibly a college student in DC at George Washington University.
As the list below denotes, there are a handful of shows whereby I was unable to secure a ticket, or otherwise get into the venue — by any means.
Also denoted are the handful of shows I got backstage — in addition to the still fewer times (with the help of connected friends) I made it to the band’s local hotel ‘hospitality suite’ for the post-show hang out. I was lucky to see and experience this environment. Quite a spectacle.
